Mrs. Meyer’s 8th Grade English Language Arts Welcome, parents!

All About Me My background I grew up in Covington. I attended Lee Road Jr. High, Covington High, and Southeastern Louisiana University (BA in English Education in 1993) My experience I’ve been teaching since 1994. I was at Mandeville Jr. High until FJH opened in 1996.

Welcome to Eighth Grade! Our goal is to strengthen the relationship between school and home. Use the planner and school website to keep yourself informed!

My Goals To give students the academic and social skills they need to progress to high school. To provide a supportive and fun classroom environment. To help students discover new interests and open their minds to the global concepts studied in literature. To teach students confidence in their writing and reasoning skills.

FJH Vision Statement FJH is a collaborative and supportive school environment that educates its students to be respectful, responsible citizens who excel in diverse settings by upholding the highest of academic expectations.

Class Subjects The subjects we cover during 8th grade English Language Art are Writing Literature Student Editing Tasks Silent Reading (SSR) Reading Reflections Vocabulary

SET (Student Editing Task) Students will be given a text to edit. There will be questions regarding the text which ask students to review their grammar knowledge. Mini grammar lessons will stem from these sessions.

DRP (Daily Reading Practice) A short text that is analyzed with 5 questions a day. Students have a guide to help them answer the test-like questions. Serves as both a reading and testing review.

Grade Distribution - ELA 10% - Interim Assessment 90% - Assignments/ Classwork/ Tests

Classroom Procedures Students copy WOD (word of the day) Literature lesson Vocabulary SET/Writing Silent Reading

Classroom Community Our classroom is a community. In our community, we have rules to help us get along with each other. Our class rules are: Be prompt. Be prepared. Be polite. Be productive. Be patient.

Homework I will not usually assign specific homework. Students and parents should be aware that homework IS reviewing notes given in class and themes and concepts we are currently studying. Check my website if there are questions.

Novels This year we will read the following as a class: The Diary of Anne Frank (play) “Flowers for Algernon” excerpt by Daniel Keyes The Call of the Wild by Jack London And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie

Credit Recovery ELA, Math, Science, SS If a student does not complete an assignment that is worth 50 points or more, he/she will have 5 additional days to turn the assignment in. He/She will lose 5% of the overall grade each day that the assignment is late. If a student does not turn in three assignments worth 50 points or more, he/she must attend a Credit Recovery, which is held for one hour after school in the library to complete the assignment. If the student does not attend Credit Recovery, an administrator will conference with the student and contact the parent. Assignment Redos/Test Retakes If a student makes a C or below on an assignment worth 50 points or more and would like to make a second attempt for a higher grade, he/she will need to fill out a request form. If a student makes a C or lower on a test and would like to retake the assessment for a higher grade, he/she must fill out a request form. Each teacher will determine when the Test Retake date will be for that particular class or student.

Let’s Have a Great Year!
