Presentation transcript:

New and Improved Reading Scheme (slides available on website) The Space Scheme is the name of our new Paulton Junior School Reading Scheme. It is being designed to meet the challenging objectives of the KS2 curriculum. So far our scheme only consists of Planet stages as these are books that meet the KS2 objectives. However not all children are ready for this, so in the next couple of weeks more stages will be created to ensure all children are appropriately challenged. ? ? ? ? ? Mercury Venus Earth Mars Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune Space Explorers Planets Space Scheme

All children in Year 3 (and some current Year 4 pupils - due to the old reading scheme stopping partway through the previous year) will be placed onto the Space Scheme. Children on the scheme will have both a scheme book and a free choice book. Every half term children on the scheme will have their progress assessed against these criteria to determine whether they should move stages: 1. To read fluently and confidently without making mistakes (90% accuracy). 2. To answer 3 simple retrieval comprehension questions (100% accuracy). To explain the meaning of 3 different words found within the text (100% accuracy). The KS2 curriculum places less emphasis on the teaching of ‘how to read’ and more emphasis on ‘understanding and explaining what has been read’; the above criteria reflect this. Children will remain on the scheme for a minimum of one big term (two half terms) to ensure they are fully prepared and supported to meet the demands of the KS2 curriculum. The class teacher will decide when it is appropriate for a child to ‘finish’ the scheme and become a free reader. A child with good progress should complete the scheme by the end of Year 4, however if required children can remain on the scheme throughout their time at PJS.

Example Retrieval Comprehension Questions Retrieval questions require the child to lift information straight from a text. Where is the story set? Who are the main characters? What colour was… ? How many… ? Where did… go ? Who said… ? Where in the book would you find… ?

In a nutshell: All Year 3 children onto Space Scheme in next couple of weeks Termly scheme assessment by teacher or teaching assistant Final assessment made by teacher Read at home to adult 3x a week – record in reading record (could practise criteria) either their scheme book or free choice book Daily Guided Reading lessons Thank you for your patience and understanding while we complete our reading scheme remodel.
