Enhancing Prediction of tropical Atlantic Climate & its impacts (PREFACE) Funded by the European Union under FP7, GA n. 603521. Objectives To better understand variability in eastern upwelling regions and the Gulf of Guinea To enhance climate modelling and prediction capabilities Improve understanding of marine ecosystems for better prediction and management Methodology Enhanced ocean observations and analysis Experimentation with climate models, including performing predictions Analysis and modelling of climatic impacts on marine ecosystems, and associated socio-economic impacts 28 partners from 18 countries 2014-2017 CCLME GCLME BCLME www.preface-project.eu Creating and consolidating an Atlantic European-African task force

Enhancing Prediction of tropical Atlantic Climate & its impacts (PREFACE) To improve climate prediction in the Tropical Atlantic to a level where socio-economic benefit can be realised, with focus on sustainable management of marine ecosystems and fisheries PREFACE will deliver: Recommendations for a sustainable long-term ocean monitoring system; Best practices for ocean and ocean- atmosphere coupled model simulations of Tropical Atlantic variability; Strategies for improved forecast quality of climate predictions and projections for the XX1 century; Guidance for the sustainable management of marine ecosystems, through a deeper understanding of oceanographic mechanisms and variability affecting small scale fisheries and an improved understanding of the effect of uncertainty in projections for African-Atlantic fishing communities. Forced Ocean models Climate / Prediction models Evaluation of climate models and bias reduction Impacts of climate change on ecosystem functioning and fisheries in West Africa The role of ocean processes in climate variability Prediction of climate in the Tropical Atlantic Impact prediction Ocean & Ecosystem data www.preface-project.eu
