This term describes a student who is in the process of learning English and receives daily services from the ESL teacher. ELL or English Language Learner Category 1 - 10

This term refers to a student who: tested proficient in English in the previous school year no longer receives daily ESL instruction continues to be monitored by the ESL teacher Category 1 - 20 T1 or Transition Year One

This term refers to a student whose home language is not English This term refers to a student whose home language is not English. He or she has completely exited the ESL program and receives no services from the ESL teacher. NELB or Non-English Language Background

This term refers to a student who did not receive ESL instruction during the previous academic year. This student continues to be monitored by the ESL teacher. T2 or Transition Year Two

This term refers to the subject of learning English as a non-native speaker. ESL or English as a Second Language Also called ESOL—English for Speakers of Other Languages

Daily immersion makes it easier to pick up speaking and listening skills, but ESL students have to learn all of their content in a foreign language, etc.
