Koru Spiral Plants Raewyn Harris is a teacher and an artist who uses Koru plants as inspiration. Do you see any other plant shapes in Raewyn Harris’ paintings? Do you see the shading in these paintings? The darker and lighter areas?

Koru Spiral Plants The koru is a spiral shaped silver fern. To people of New Zealand, the koru represents the unfolding of new life or renewal. The spiral shape is a found in many artworks, sculptures and tattoos.

Do you see the Koru in this painting? Koru Spiral Plants The koru is famous for the unfurling spiral shape. In Maori, the language of New Zealand, Koru means “loop”. Do you see the Koru in this painting?

Make your outline with: black sharpie on white paper OR white crayon on black paper

Drawing Koru Fill in your outlined picture using mostly cool color tones found in nature. Save your warm tones for the background.

Shade your plants Choose your color. Start at one side of your object and color with light pressure. Apply more pressure as you get closer to the other side. Apply the most pressure at the opposite side you started on. Go over the whole object with a lighter color to blend the shading together.

FILL YOUR PAPER WITH COLOR! Do not leave any part of your paper blank. Fill it with color!
