Bio Today: Properties of Water Notes & Lab Turn in at end of class Quiz (Atoms, Bonds, Water): MON 10/9 (A), TUE 10/10 (B)

Pre-Lab Vocab The following vocabulary terms are associated with water’s various unique properties. First, we will define the terms. Then, you will do various activities that demonstrate these properties in action.

Polarity-relates to the symmetry of a molecule Polarity-relates to the symmetry of a molecule. A molecule is polar if it is NOT symmetrical and has “two poles” Hydrogen Bonds-the attractive forces found between water molecules as well as in other molecules containing Hydrogen and Nitrogen, Oxygen, or Fluorine.

Cohesion- the attraction between molecules of water (co=together; water sticks to water think: “water attracted to water”)   Adhesion- the attraction between water molecules and other substances. (add to something else; water sticking to something else. think: “adhesive tape”!)

Hydrophilic-refers to a substance that is attracted to and mixes well with water Hydrophobic-refers to a substance that is attracted to and does not mix with water

Surface Tension-caused by the cohesive property of water Surface Tension-caused by the cohesive property of water. Minimizes the surface area of a liquid. When drops of a liquid with high surface tension are placed on a surface, they tend to bead together.

Universal Solvent-water is known as the universal solvent because it can dissolve more substances than any other liquid due to its unique properties

Specific Heat Capacity- the amount of heat energy needed to raise the temperature of 1 gram of a substance by 1 degree Celsius.

Density- the amount of mass in a certain amount of space (volume)

Capillary Action- the ability of a liquid to rise up in narrow spaces without the assistance of, and in opposition to, external forces like gravity.

Water Lab There are 5 stations you must rotate through Station 6 = Demo At each station, follow the directions, make observations, then answer the questions. Clean up according to the directions at each station!
