The Life Childhood & Education Academic Career Death Grew up in a family of rabbis Decided religion wasn’t for him; left the family business His classmates in university (some of the most brilliant of the nineteenth century) & surroundings inspired a scientific outlook towards society Lack of social science curriculum created interest in sociology Academic Career The Division of Labour in Society: doctoral dissertation, examined the nature of human society & its development Franco-German War: France’s loss inspired nationalistic fervor in its citizens and a determined secular approach by Durkheim, inspiring his greater role in politics The Rules of Sociological Method: first manifesto of what sociology is and how it ought to be practiced L’Année Sociologique: first French social science journal, established by Durkheim Suicide: case study presenting idea of what a sociological monograph might look like The Elementary Forms of The Religious Life: last major work; analysis of religion as social phenomenon Death WW1: Durkheim died in 1915 of a broken heart (more specifically, a stroke).
