Compacted 7th and 8th Grade Math nsoyuer@tmsacademy.org soyuermath.weebly.com

What is Compacted 7th and 8th Grade Math!?!!! I get this question very often! Compacted 7th&8th math(prealgebra) is an advanced course for sixth graders. This year-long course prepares students to enter the study of Math I (a high school credited course) as seventh graders. The focus of the course is building the foundation necessary for success in the study of algebra. Students will become familiar with the following: the properties of mathematics; the language of algebra; solving one step and two step equations; adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing rational numbers and integers; solving inequalities; graphing equations and inequalities; proportion; percent; statistics and graphs; probability; applying algebra to geometry; measurement; introduction to trigonometry; and the study of polynomials.

Topics of Study Unit 1: Principles of Algebra Unit 2: Rational Numbers Unit 3: Multi-Step Equations and Inequalities Unit 4: Exponents and Roots Unit 5: Ratios, Proportions, and Similarity Unit 6: Percents Unit 7: Graphs and Functions Unit 8: Foundations of Geometry Unit 9: Data, Statistics, and Probability Unit 10: Polynomials

Student Required Materials Students are expected to organize their class materials how they see fit, but we recommend a 1” binder with tabs for homework, classwork/notes, and study guides/reviews. PENCILS ONLY. Personal Scientific Calculator: Please write your name on your calculator. (No sharing calculators please.) Optional: graph paper, ruler and erasable colored pencils for class activities I will be providing guided notes for classwork and handouts for most homework assignments. Therefore, students may wish to empty out their notebooks occasionally, perhaps once a quarter, leaving math material acquired so far in the year in a notebook or folder at home.

Grading Policy Minor: 20% Homework will be sent mostly as handouts. Weekly study island or mathxl assignments. Homework and potentially other small assignments. Classwork assignments Medium: 30% Quizzes Smaller assessments Could be small projects completed in the classroom There are no retakes. At least four per quarter. Major: 50% Tests Major assessments There are no retakes. Two to three major assessments each quarter.

Homework Policy!!! Homework may be given as a handout, assigned through study island, mathxl or some other form of assessment. Students can expect homework after every class, though Mrs. Soyuer may try not to send HW home on the weekends. Homework is checked for completion only as answers are provided Homework should show all work for credit Late policy: if you do not have your homework on the due date, you have 3 days to turn it in for half credit. After this, the grade will remain a zero. Mrs. Soyuer will put in weekly homework assignments into powerschool and post it on website. It is unacceptable for a student to go to the teacher at the end of the quarter and ask for missing work and partial credit. You have 3 days to turn in late homework only. .

Additional Homework Note Please note that homework counts for only 20% of the students’ quarter grades. Therefore, a student may have a 100% for homework, but receive a much lower quiz/test score. The quiz/test scores have more weight and will have much greater effect on the overall grade than the 100% on the homework.

Grade Breakdown Quarter 1: 25% Quarter 2: 25% Quarter 3: 25%

Class Website soyuermath.weebly.com When you visit my teacher website, you will find the agenda/homework for each day, helpful resources, test prep, and more. Please explore and get to know this site so that you can use it as necessary. Also, please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions/comments/concerns. I will post updates of our classroom and important announcements in the 7th and 8th Grade Compacted" section.

If you have not been invited to a conference with me but would like to schedule one, please send me an email at nsoyuer@tmsacademy.org or use the link. Please also send a few times that would work best for you. I will respond to schedule the conference.
