The Byzantine Empire

Constantine In 330, he made Constantinople (in Turkey) the “new” Rome. The city was located on the Mediterranean Sea and was a very large trading hub. It was a vital link between Asia and Europe

Map

Justinian Build the huge church of Hagia Sophia, which means “Holy Wisdom.” Demonstrated his wealth and commitment to Christianity

Justinian’s Code He set up a commission to revive and organize all the laws under ancient Rome. It was so well organized that it eventually ended up in Western Europe 600 years after it was put together.

The Empire Collapses It faced attacks from Persians, Slavs, Vikings, Huns, and Arabs. After the Crusades the Empire did not control much land in Turkey.

Byzantine Church It was Christian but with some differences Priests could marry. Used Greek instead of Latin Less emphasis on Christmas Leads to a divide in the Catholic Church, West vs. East.

Big Takeaways…… 1. What was the MOST influential factor in Constantinople becoming successful and wealthy? 2. What was Justinian best known for?

Enduring Understanding…… Trade and culture are mutually dependent. How does today’s notes and readings relate to that E.U.?
