Truth is Stranger than Fiction Lesson Eight: Compare how two non-fiction texts have been made to sound authoritative through the use of varied linguistic and grammatical devices

Astronaut Hibernation List the benefits of hibernation given in the article. Look at the 3 images on the handout. Which of these would you choose to illustrate the article? Why?

What makes a scientific text sound authoritative? Use of an expert Specialist technical vocabulary Present tense complex sentences starting with subordinate clauses to explain cause and effect (processes) To spot complex sentences like these look for ones that start with connectives e.g. ‘By….’ ‘To….’ ‘While….’ ‘With….’
