Workshop One SWOT Analysis

Considering the entire heritage sector of the Outer Hebrides Document strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats In small groups: develop lists in all four areas. vote on the top five in each area.

A STRENGTH is an internal factor which benefits the sector A WEAKNESS is an internal factor which negatively impacts the sector An OPPORTUNITY is an external factor which could benefit the sector A THREAT is an external factor which could negatively impact the sector

It’s OK to disagree Everyone can participate Keep an open mind Keep to the time limits

Five minutes: introductions within your group Twenty minutes: five minutes each on strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats Five minutes: use stickers to vote on the top five in each category Ten minutes: feedback from each group on their top fives

Workshop 2 Key Priorities

Turn the SWOT analysis into a set of priorities. Priorities which cover the sector as a whole, not a single organisation. The Comhairle’s Heritage Service, for example, will then consider how it contributes to these priorities when doing its own forward planning work.

“Coordinate marketing and promotion to encourage visits by tourists” Rather than: “The Comhairle to coordinate a joint marketing scheme”. Responsibilities and resources will be considered in the next workshop.

How can we maximise the use of our strengths? How can we overcome the threats we’ve identified? What do we need to do to overcome the identified weaknesses? How can we take advantage of our opportunities? A priority could be designed to deal with one or more of the above.

Twenty minutes to write down as many ideas for priorities as you can Ten minutes to discuss which are the most important, and vote using stickers. Ten minutes to hear feedback from groups on their top fives.

Resourcing Priorities Workshop Three Resourcing Priorities

Objectives can only be achieved if they are properly resourced. Think about how the key objectives on the screen could be achieved. Time and people are as important as money. Ideas for funders, consortiums, and partnerships could be particularly useful.

Ideas which wrap up a number of priorities together could be particularly valuable. Having an idea is not the same as making a commitment to doing it! We will revisit these ideas as part of the pre-publication consultation and as part of the Great Place Strategy work.

Twenty minutes: discuss ideas for resourcing these priorities Ten minutes: feedback from all groups on their ideas followed by open discussion
