Language Arts – Warm Up 10/23/17 Hooks – I.A.N. Add the following definitions to your I.A.N. in the E.L.A. Terms section: hook – an opening sentence or two that grabs the reader’s interest and introduces the general topic of the essay thesis statement – a sentence, in the introduction of an essay, that states the writer’s position or opinion on the topic of the essay

Language Arts – Warm Up 10/23/17 Types of Hooks – I.A.N. p 104-105. First, add “Types of Hooks” to your Writing Strategies T.O.C. for pages 104-105. Then, write what is written in pink ink below: Hook: An opening sentence or two that grabs the reader’s interest and introduces the general topic of the essay Examples of Hooks: (I.A.N. p. 104) An anecdote (HIGHLIGHT ANECDOTE) A surprising statement A strong opinion A quote Historical information

THE INTRODUCTION the hook ANECDOTE: An interesting little story Include sights, sounds, smells and other sensory images Keep it brief If I wanted to write an informative article on pizza… I remember encountering my first pizza ten years ago. That’s right. I was only three, but I remember that first bite of cheesy goodness as if it were yesterday.

Practice: The Anecdote Remember, an anecdote is a personal little story that helps the reader connect with you, the writer. Here is an example introduction paragraph with an anecdote hook and a thesis ending: I remember going to the grocery store to pick out a special lunch to pack, making sure my favorite outfit was clean and ready to wear, and not being able to sleep the night before the big field trip. Actually, looking back 45 years, there are very few school days I can recall as clearly as field trip days. Field trips brought reality to our lessons and made school exciting!

THE INTRODUCTION the hook A SUPRISING STATEMENT: There are many ways a statement can surprise a reader. Sometimes the statement is surprising because it is disgusting. Sometimes it is joyful. Sometimes it is shocking. Sometimes it is surprising because of who said it. Take care to explain how the statement relates to your topic Description is great, over-exaggeration is not Make sure that the statement is relevant, not just shocking

Look at the example below of a surprising statement as a hook. I remember reading this article that said students learn history 75% better if they can see the historical sites they’re learning about. That’s just unbelievable. It sounds like students should be out “in the world” every single day. Field trips bring reality to our lessons and make school exciting!
