So what happens after the fire? As Jane feared, Rochester eventually leaves Thornfield. However, he returns a few weeks later with several guests accompanying him, including a young woman named Blanche Ingram. Everyone at Thornfield assumes that Blanche and Rochester will soon be engaged and married. Rochester hosts a party for all of his guests, and on the night of the party the “supernatural” returns. One of Rochester’s guests, Mr. Mason is mysteriously stabbed. Once again, Rochester turns to Jane for help in the matter and requests that Jane keep this incident to herself.

So what happens after the fire? Shortly after this incident, Jane receives news that Mrs. Reed is ill. She leaves Thornfield for a brief period and returns to Gateshead to look after her dying aunt. (Yea, where is John Reed now?) When Jane returns to Thornfield, Rochester and Blanche are now practically engaged. Jane and Rochester now discuss where Jane will go once he and Blanche are married . . .

Jane Leaves Thornfield Rochester pleads with Jane to forgive him for misleading her. He begs her to stay with him and even says they should runaway to France together and escape everything in England. Even though Jane secretly confides in the reader that she forgave Rochester immediately, she refuses to stay. She says that staying with Rochester would make her no more than a mistress. She flees Thornfield, uncertain of where she will go. Jane finds her self back in the penniless position of her childhood after she exhausts what little money she has. She even spends some time living on the streets before she is taken in by the kind Rivers family.
