Geography Played a huge role in the development of each colony Each colony had to adapt different to: Climate Soil Terrain Availability to rivers, harbors, and oceans Natural Resources Made Each Colony unique !!!

The New England Colonies Geography Had long winters and infertile soil which made farming very difficult Had a lot of wood for lumber and great fishing areas People Worked and owned small business Grew much of their own food Puritan Work Ethic
The Middle Colonies Geography Crops Industries Soil & climate were much better suited for farming than N.E. colonies Crops Large amounts of wheat's and other Cash Crops Industries Grate port cities (NY and Philadelphia) spread trade Sawmills, Mines, & Iron Works exploded
The Southern Colonies Geography Crops Warm climate, rich soil, & long growing season made it perfect for farming Crops Tobacco = NC & VA Rice = GA & SC
Plantations Are: Depended on: Owners Large scale estates / farms Slaves Owners Controlled the south Economically and politically
Great Awakening Questioned the commitment and authority of religious leaders Questioned the religious faith Preachers stressed the importance of personal religious experience New religious groups Baptist Methodist
Education Children went to school to learn about religion To read the bible Religion in schools helped create Colleges Harvard Princeton William and Mary To train ministers
Family Life Men were the heads of the family Women looked after the children and worked around the household In towns Women worked as maids, cooks, nurses, teachers, shopkeepers, seamstresses
Government The Enlightenment and the Great Awakening influenced: Egalitarianism = equality of man Great Britain let the colonies do what they wanted at first Colonies saw Parliament as “Protectors” ??????
