Presentation transcript:

Mission for Westminster School District G.A.T.E. Students nurture potential of students challenge those with advanced learning capabilities address the needs of gifted learners across all curricular areas To raise awareness that the utilization of differentiated instruction is a necessary tool in ensuring all student’s mastery of academic standards (effective teaching).

How do we meet the needs of your gifted child?

Differentiation Depth/complexity (and relevancy) Alter the pace and style as necessary Use high level questioning (think Bloom’s!) Provide guidance to students’ curiosity Allow students to choose content, allow group brainstorming Allow students to show creativity and encourage perseverance Encourage students to show what they learned through varying media...theatrics, reports, TV commercials, art, song, demonstrations, journals, or other suitable means Allow students to prepare and research alone or together

“Don’t Make Me Walk When I Want to Fly”

Tiered Assignment A. You are a Summer gardener. • List vegetables you could grow in your garden • Draw pictures of your 3 favorites • Describe your 3 favorites explaining how you might serve them. B. You are a year round gardener. • Use a Venn diagram to compare and contrast plants that grow well in a Winter garden and plants that do well in a Summer garden. • Using the diagram, write a 2 paragraph summary detailing the differences between the two gardens. C. You are a landscape architect. • Design a 4’ X 6’ garden, labeling all plant names • Include an irrigation system, noting the movement of the sun • Write a summary including duration of sunlight expected for this garden, and in which season this garden will thrive.
