PwC About Alexandra Alexander was born on the 3 rd March 1847 in Edinburgh. He was educated In London. He moved to the US to teach. There he pioneered a system called visible speech, developed by his father, to teach deaf-mute children.

In 1872 Alexander owned a school in Boston. The school subsequently became part of Boston University, where Bell was appointed professor of vocal physiology in He became a naturalised U.S. citizen in 1882.

Alexander was always fascinated by the idea of transmitting sound. By 1875 he came up with a simple receiver that turned electricity into sound.

o Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone on 7 th March o Within a year the first telephone exchange was built in Connecticut and the Bell Telephone Company was created in 1877, with Bell the owner of a third of the shares, quickly making him a wealthy man.

However, debate still continues who actually invented the telephone. It has been said that Antonio Meucci created it. He was an Italian inventor, but nobody really knows who invented it.
