National Initiatives on K-12 STEM Education Auditi Chakravarty, The College Board February 11, 2014

The College Board’s Mission The College Board’s mission is to connect students to college success and opportunity. We are a not-for- profit membership organization committed to excellence and equity in education.

AP STEM Access Program A $5 million grant made from Google as part of their Global Impact Awards to DonorsChoose.org will enable public high schools across the country to start approximately 500 new AP math and science courses and to encourage traditionally underrepresented minority and female students who demonstrate strong academic potential to enroll and explore these areas of study and related careers. CB is participating in a number of initiatives specifically oriented to increase STEM access and participation. This one was created to increase the number of traditionally underrepresented minority and female high school students that participate in Advanced Placement® (AP) courses in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) disciplines.

AP CS Principles New Computer Science course/assessment being developed in collaboration with NSF to broaden participation in CS, especially by women and underrepresented minorities Anchors the CS10K Project, which aims to prepare 10,000 CS teachers in 10,000 high schools across the US AP CS courses serve as a focal point for efforts by code.org, Google, and HE institutions to support policy and teacher prep Specifically designed to reach students who are not currently pursuing CS as a major

The effect was generally strongest for STEM majors. This slide shows students’ majors at the start of their third year in college, and thus indicates persistence, since   Freshman year appears to be critical for STEM majors. The largest  difference between STEM switchers and persisters was FYGPA Females less likely to persist than males in STEM majors Underrepresented minorities less likely to persist than whites and Asians in STEM majors First-generation students are less likely to persist in STEM majors than students whose parents completed some college Students who persisted in an Engineering major were more likely to have taken at least one AP exam in STEM than students who switched from that intended major, with ~72% of persisters having taken at least 1 AP STEM exam compared to ~53% of switchers 15.1 Engineering, and Physical Scien 16.2 29.1 14.0 Social Sciences 18.1
