Figure 1 Trial profile Excluded patients: 244 were younger than 1 year or older than 65 years; 16 had severe respiratory infection; one was referred to hospital; three had suspected tuberculosis; six had liver disease; 110 had a medical history of neoplastic disease, congestive cardiac failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, insulin-dependent diabetes, or renal disease; 46 were pregnant; nine had no access to a telephone; 417 had already taken antibiotics; 65 had symptoms present for more than 2 weeks; 169 were not able to come for the follow-up visit; 237 declined to participate; 172 had no reason for exclusion recorded.
