Voice Lesson #2

Vincent Van Gogh You will examine a self-portrait by Vincent Van Gogh, a famous painter. Think about how Van Gogh expresses his voice—his style or personality. Look carefully at the details of Van Gogh’s self-portrait.

Write About It What is Van Gogh saying about himself? Complete two sentences as if you were the Van Gogh of this portrait. I am… I feel… Base your statements on the picture, not your own feelings. How do you know what VG is saying about himself? What evidence can you find in the picture that supports your statements? Write down the details that support your thoughts.

Van Gogh’s Self-Portrait

Marc Chagall Examine a self-portrait by Marc Chagall, another famous author. Think about how he expresses his voice- his creativity or personality. Look carefully at the details of Chagall’s self-portrait

Marc Chagall’s Self-Portrait What is Chagall saying about himself? Complete these two statements as if YOU were the Chagall of this portrait. I am… I feel… How do you know what Chagall is saying about himself? What evidence can you find? How does he do that? How does Chagall control voice in his painting? Write down the details that support your thoughts.

Marc Chagall’s Self-Portrait

Compare/Contrast Van Gogh’s and Chagall’s self-portraits Explain how they are similar and different. Be certain to focus on the choices the artists made. Van Gogh BOTH Chagall

Cultural identity writing: Peer Revision (narrative or poem) What is your clear and strongly maintained central idea (e.g., internal/external conflict – as in Two Kinds - or central metaphor/concept – food as in Ethnic Hash) to focus the essay? What examples/evidence did you use to create a vivid sense of personal cultural identity? Where are you ‘telling’ instead of ‘showing’? How can you change it? (next slide for example) What is your organizational strategy? How does it create clarity and cohesion? Where are your transition words? How does it begin? How does it end? Where is your natural voice? Does it sound forced? Look for ways to be original.

“By Any Other Name” Discuss key questions What specific textual evidence helps the reader understand the cultural identity of the characters in “By Ay Other Name”? What conclusions can we draw about the cultural identity of the sisters?

“Legal Alien” Collaborative Reader Response Choral Reading Exercise Collaborative Reader Response (Everyone needs TWO sticky notes.) Individual Response – Sticky Note Identify the juxtaposition used by the narrator and what it emphasizes/reveals. Collaborative Response (groups of 4 – grab 1 sticky note each) – Best Answer How does the author represent cultural identity in the poem?

Synthesis of Multiple Texts Create a diagram (a tri venn diagram) to synthesize information about the art, the poem, and the memoir excerpt as you answer these questions: What is emphasized in the art, Self-Portrait on the Borderline Between Mexico and the United States? What is emphasized in the poem, Legal Alien? What is emphasized in the memoir, By Any Other Name? What ideas and images are present in the poem but absent from the art and memoir? What ideas and images are present in the art but absent from the poem and memoir? What ideas and images are present in the memoir but absent from the art and poem?
