World war ii Trouble on the Horizon

Germany German economy destroyed after World War I. Hyperinflation – money is worthless. High unemployment. Unstable government. German military reduced. Germany lost territory and colonies.

Adolf Hitler Rose to power in 1933. Leader of the Nazi Party. Anti-communist. Anti-Semetic/racist. Ultra-nationalist. Fascist Promised to fix the German economy and military.

German expansion Hitler rebuilt German military. Quickly took territory lost in World War I – violated the Treaty of Versailles. Austria annexed in 1938 and Czechoslovakia in 1939.

Italy Benito Mussolini. Fascist, like Hitler. Invaded Ethiopia in 1936

japan Military took control of the country in the early 1920s. Hit by the Great Depression, took over territories to gain natural resources. Invaded Manchuria in 1931, China in 1937.

appeasement Japan, Italy, & Germany violated the Treaty of Versailles. League of Nations failed to act, no consequences. Munich Pact - allowed Germany to take the Sudetenland in exchange for peace…

Isolationism US not a member of the League of Nations. Concerned with the Great Depression. Took no action against Japan, Italy, or Germany…

Outbreak of war Hitler invaded Poland – Sept. 1, 1939 France and Great Britain declared war.

German victories Poland defeated within one month. Germany quickly defeated Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Holland, Denmark, Norway, & France. End of 1940, Germany controlled Europe.

Neutrality? Isolationism Lend-Lease – allowed Allied nations to borrow military equipment. Cash-Carry – sold military equipment to Allies.

Pearl harbor Japan – allies with Germany Attacked American forces at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii Dec. 7, 1941 America declared war on Japan, Germany declared war on U.S.
