SMALL INTESTINE Spaghetti time!

SMALL INTESTINE Roughly 20 feet Small in diameter Champion digester Absorbs

SMALL INTESTINE Has 3 main parts. 1. Duodenum 2. Jejunum 3. Ileum

Duodenum Section 1

Duodenum First 10-12 inches after the stomach. (Duodenal ulcers)

Duodenum Chyme- STUFF released from the stomach by the pyloric sphincter. ACIDIC!!

Duodenum Bile Comes from the liver to neutralize acid. Emulsifies fat Adds color to feces.

Duodenum Pancreatic Juice: Comes from pancreas Neutralizes acid Releases 3 BIG enzymes

Duodenum Amylase: Starch  maltose

Duodenum Trypsin: Proteins  peptides

Duodenum Lipase: Lipids  Fatty acids & Glycerols

Jejunum Section 2

Jejunum About 8 feet long BULK of nutrient absorption

Jejunum Intestinal juice: prepares food to be absorbed.

Jejunum Further breakdown Peptidase: Peptides  amino acids

Jejunum Maltase: Maltose  Glucose

Ileum About 12 feet long Connects to large intestine
