Reconstruction

The South Has to Come Back Home Presidential Plan 10% of each Southern state had to sign an oath of loyalty to the United States A provisional (temporary) government was set up in each Southern state until three conditions were met: Texas had to nullify (cancel) the Ordinance of Secession Texas had to acknowledge that the United States would NOT pay the debt TX had built up during the war Texas had to ratify the 13th amendment which abolished slavery in the United States White Southerners could vote after they sign an oath of allegiance to the United States

The Emancipation Proclamation and the End of Slavery in Texas!!! Yay!!!  Emancipation Proclamation – (p. 425) January 1, 1863 President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation (during the war) It said ALL ENSLAVED PEOPLE IN THE CONFEDERATE STATES WERE FREE General Granger landed in Galveston on June 19, 1865 and told Texas slaves they WERE FREE!!!!!!!!  The government set up the Freedman’s Bureau to help the freed slaves Helped freed people find jobs and food Started schools to provide education and skills to freed people Freedman’s Bureau Problems in Texas Texas was too big White Texas resented the Bureau for helping former slaves
