I used culture to develop my understanding of diversity. Describe what you did and how you did it: Went to the book mobile in garden city to read to the kids Introduced myself then read my story about culture to the kids The driver asked the kids if they had any questions, but they didn't They said they enjoyed my book Name: Bells For Books Mission Statement: “To ensure that every child in Garden City has access to Library books.” Project Purpose /Need: Mobile literacy program in Garden City. Providing convenient learning for children in the community. Stimulating there minds with books and companionship. The bus includes a number of bilingual books offering diversity and options for the children. Reflection Importance of Ethics Articulate your learning: With this service learning project I learned about diversity, culture and about Bells on Books. Diversity and Culture go hand in hand. Showing children about how our world has to many different people on it form different backgrounds is one thing. Beyond that showing them that we all bring something different and valuable to the table is another. It is important to for children to learn about there background and the background of the people around them to see just how different this world is. The book mobile is a great place to teach kids, and get them interested in reading. Reading is an amazing gift where you can learn about real events and escape to another world. It’s important for children to be able to have access to books and additional learning and the Bells for Books program does that amazingly. The book mobile prodded me to think about what other types of learning we can and should make available for children to learn. Creating this book got me thinking about how we should talk about our cultures and traditions, and how we should ask people about there own. It is not enough to live in the now and follow traditions because we have them but to look back and figure out why they are important to us and why we continue to use them. This project effected my personal skills by opening my eyes to how diversity is forgotten in our daily lives. We have made progress and now we are at a stop in how we are seeing each other. We need to cherish what each of us brings to the table and respect the experiences we have had. In relations to a Communication major diversity and culture are prominent, when you talk to people it is important to know where they are from and adjust your language and mannerisms appropriate to show respect to the other person. Having an ethnical philosophy is important to being an active member of society because it effects how you handle situations you encounter in your life. Personally I think that all the philosophies have a time and place that they will be useful and situations where they wouldn't’t be effective. In this activity we use our ethical philosophies to reflect on how we view the world around us. Looking into diversity, starts additionally thinking on ethics and how they effect each of us differently. ETHICAL PRACTICES: With Utilitarianism ethics holds that maximizing happiness and minimizing suffering holds the greatest good for society. In Kantianism ethics is emphasizes the principles behind actions rather than an action’s results. Here acting right has to be motivated by your principles to treat everyone with respect and equal. You don’t just act ethically because it is the right thing to do, but because you believe it is right. Deontology focuses on the consequences and believes in duty and obligation over honest desire to help.. Virtue focuses on what the individual should do based on their inward behavior rather on culture and custom. If the persons character is good then the choices they make will be good. Form the ethical practices listed above you can see that there are a lot of absolutes and when they are actually in practice it can be hard for a person to act the same way under ever circumstance. Additionally most people cant act objectively when making decisions because they take into account other peoples suffering and some people are worth more then others, but that can harm the greater good. Thinking about ethical practices is important, deciding which practice is best is difficult. Impact on Community Impact of your work in the community: Direct Impact: Seven Children listened to me read my book for 5 minutes. Indirect Impact: I introduced them to cultural diversity. How people can be friends and be form different backgrounds. How they take things form there origin and bring it into there traditions.
