Primary Newsletter – Friday 19th January 2018 OUTSTANDING LEARNING Every week in our newsletters we usually share all of the really exciting extra curricular activities that we organise for our children, such as trips, clubs and special assemblies and events. We do however not get much of an opportunity to share some of the outstanding learning that goes on within classrooms. Each week, we now plan to also share with you some outstanding learning from different year groups. YEAR 2 VISITOR On Tuesday this week, Year 2 had a very special visit from a marine biologist and scuba diving instructor. He spent the afternoon with both classes, providing interesting information, fascinating facts and he also shared amazing videos of his scuba diving explorations! This was an enriching opportunity for the children, as it allowed them to learn more about their current topic 'Down in the Deep Blue', and provided an amazing opportunity for any questions they had to be answered! Emefa in Year 1 did some outstanding writing this week. She was able to recall the beginning of the story and use story language to retell it. Her writing is punctuated and she is even beginning to use cursive handwriting! Well done Emefa. This week Tolu in Year 2 worked really hard on working out his own method of doubling 3 digit numbers. Keane in Year 6 did some lovely information text writing this week. He used really sophisticated language and ensured he included embedded clauses. YEAR 3 AND 4 BASKETBALL TOURNAMANT Yesterday a group of children in years 3 and 4 took part in a basketball tournament. They were split up into two teams and played against a number of other schools within the borough of Lewisham. Each team played 5 games. They initially needed time to warm up but by the last game they managed to draw 0-0. One of our students Toby Carpenter won an award for being the most honest player of the day out of all the schools .They all played really well and did the school proud. FOCUS GROUPS St Matthew Academy are working with a marketing team and on Tuesday 23rd January they will be in school speaking to a number of different focus groups. If you are available on Tuesday 9am – 9.30am and would like to be part of a focus group, please inform Mrs Beckley either in person or via a message to your child’s class teacher or the main reception.
