SEDIMENTARY ROCKS

Sedimentary Rock – Rocks formed from sediment that is compacted and cemented

Stratification – the process in which sedimentary rocks are arranged in layers Strata – layers of rock

Clastic Sedimentary Rock – rock made of fragments of rocks cemented together

Chemical Sedimentary Rock – rock that forms from solutions of dissolved minerals and water

Organic Sedimentary Rock – rocks that form from the remains of organisms that were once living

Types of Sedimentary Rocks Limestone: Made of calcium carbonate or calcite. The most common sources are the shells of marine organisms. These type of rocks can be found in ancient sea beds.

Types of Sedimentary Rocks Conglomerate: Made of rounded pebbles cemented together. These pebbles have been rounded by the action of moving water. These can be found near rivers, streams, or long ago beaches.

Types of Sedimentary Rocks Coal: Made of fossilized peat or dead plant material Found at the bottom of ancient swamps

Types of Sedimentary Rocks Sandstone: Made from sediment formed from weathering of rock into sand grains that are then cemented together into solid stone over time Found in areas where ancient seafloors, dunes, deserts, or beaches once occurred
