Ch. 5 Sec. 1-2 Notes Ideas about Government Magna Carta Document signed by King John of England in 1215 Made the king subject to law English Bill of Rights Established the British Parliament Made it to were King/Queen could not make a law without approval from Parliament Suffrage The right to vote

Ch. 5 Sec. 1-2 Notes Articles of Confederation Ratification (Ratify) Congress becomes single branch of government of the national government Given limited powers Settle conflicts among states Issue coins Borrow money Make treaties Ask states for money and soldiers No President or Court System Ratification (Ratify) Official approval

Ch. 5 Sec. 1-2 Notes Relations with Other Countries Great Britain Britain would not vacate all forts in US territory Cut off all trading with US Created high tariffs (tax on imported/exported goods) Caused British citizens/merchants to pay more for US goods Spain Closed Mississippi ports to US Angered many US citizens who used Mississippi River to ship their goods

Ch. 5 Sec. 1-2 Notes Economic Problems Interstate Commerce Inflation Trade between two of more states Each state had their own trade laws making trading difficult Inflation Increased price for goods/services, when value of money is decreasing Government could not repay war debts Some states began printing off large amounts of paper money Depression Period of low economic activity with increase in unemployment
