Developing Mastery in Maths
What is mastery? Deep and sustainable learning The ability to build on something that has already been sufficiently mastered The ability to reason about a concept and make connections Fluency 2 outcomes for connections: deepen conceptual mathematical understanding; complete in fewer steps Conceptual fluency e.g. column addition has with secure understanding of number bonds and place value – key to everyone
“Keep up, not catch up!” In essence, all children need a deep understanding of the mathematics they are learning so that: Future mathematical learning is built on solid foundations which do not need to be re-taught There is no need for separate catch up programme due to some children falling behind There will be small group pre-teach and consolidation groups for some children Children who can often fall a long way behind are better able to keep up with their peers so that gaps in attainment are narrowed whilst the attainment of all is raised
How is depth achieved? Longer time on topics Detail in exploring the concept – all aspects exposed and linked Small steps Questioning and activities develop reasoning and make connections
What’s Changed? Mixed ability classes – starting in Year 3, and to follow this year group through their school life Regular change of talk partner Emphasis on using concrete resources and pictures before moving onto abstract ideas. Children to explain their reasoning and understanding of Mathematics More focus on precise vocabulary
Teaching for Mastery – 5 big ideas Number Facts Table Facts Making Connections Procedural Conceptual Chains of Reasoning Access Pattern Representation & Structure Mathematical Thinking Fluency Variation Coherence Small connected steps are easier to take
