Media Ratios AQR 1-5

Introduction When buying a new television most people don’t think about what the ratios mean. For instance, what is the difference between a 16:9 ratio screen to a 14:9 or the fact that the screen is a 52 inch? Or, what are the dimensions of this screen and can it truly fit on wall in that area?

Content From TV to your phone display and any other rectangular display they all have an aspect ratio that written as W:H or W/H. Where W is the longest side of the rectangle and H is the shortest. Television screens had an aspect ratio of 4:3 and have since then been replaced in most part by the new wide-screen HD displays with an aspect ratio of 16:9.

Review Questions/Practice Problems What does 50 inch television mean? 1. Find the Width and Height of an older style 50 inch television with an aspect ratio of 4:3.

Review Questions/Practice Problems 2. Find the Width and Height of an older style 55 inch television with an aspect ratio of 16:9.

Review Questions/Practice Problems Some shows are filmed with an aspect ratio of 4:3 and then shown on a screen with an aspect ratio of 16:9 or a 16:9 image on a 4:3 screen. This has caused the use of black bars that will cover portions of the screen.

Review Questions/Practice Problems Pillar box Letter box

Review Questions/Practice Problems 3. Using the Figure 1 calculate the percentage of space that is filled in by the black bars at the top and bottom of the screen. 4. Using the Figure 2 calculate the percentage of space that is filled in by the black bars at the sides of the screen.

Review Questions/Practice Problems 5. Can your knowledge of aspect ratios effect your decision on what types of visual screen you might buy? Formulate some questions you might ask a sales person about a product that you are about to purchase.
