WHAT IS IT? Khan Academy is a free website that can be accessed by students, teachers, & parents Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and personalized learning in the arts, math, & sciences Can be accessed on any computer that has an internet connection MISSION: Our mission is to provide a free, world-class, education for anyone, anywhere.
SAFETY FIRST Khan Academy has a privacy policy for children who are under the age of 13 Children who are under the age of 13 need consent from a parent or guardian to access the website At the beginning of the year I send home a document stating what Khan Academy is as well as why/how we use it The parent/guardian will sign and list their email address In the past 4 years that I have been using Khan Academy, I yet to have any parent decline the use to their child I will attach the document I use with my PowerPoint at the end
GETTING STARTED You will need to create an account by going to https://www.khanacademy.org/ Next, click Teachers Start Here It will then have you create an account. You can either use Google, Facebook, or an email address. After, it will have you select the areas or subjects that you are teaching I use Khan Academy specifically for math. I teach 3rd grade so this is the box I will check
GETTING STARTED CONT. You will then click on Add new class Next, enter your class name (Ex. Mrs. Rossman’s Class), subject area/grade level, and you will then start adding students. You will then start adding students to your class NOTE: you can either add your students yourself or you can have them create and account, but you would need to give them your class code This all would depend on how old your students are
ADDING STUDENTS I always manually add my students because I teach third graders Click Students, then Add new students Here you will then type in their FIRST NAME ONLY and they can create a unique username that they will remember (I always write it down as well) Ex: soccerstar12 They will then create a password
ASSIGNING ASSIGNMENTS Content Tab Click on your class and then click on the content tab at the top It will then list all of the standards for your grade level or subject area You can assign the whole topic, or a specific standard You can also differentiate by assigning different assignments to different students If I know a student is struggling with regrouping, I will just assign that content area Then. click assign and your students will be able to see the assignment Assign
STUDENT VIEW OF ASSIGNMENTS When the student logs in, their assignments will pop up It shows the assignment name, as well as the due date They will then click start Start
VIDEO FOR STUDENTS Students will get an introductory video on the task that you have assigned The video is an actual instructor explaining the task that they are about to begin
TEACHERS VIEW OF ASSIGNMENTS Assignment Name Performance After students finish, and submit the assignment the teacher will get a report of how the student performed on the task It will show whether the student was able to answer the problems correctly, or if they need more practice Problem
FINAL THOUGHTS I have found Khan Academy very helpful to use in my classroom. It makes differentiating very easy, as I am able to assign different assignments to different students I can assign 2nd grade problems to a student who needs some reviewing, or I can assign 4th grade assignments to a student who needs enrichment on a particular skill Parts of Khan Academy would fall under the Substitution category in the SAMR Model. For example: 642+128=_____. This is a problem that could be answered without technology Other parts of Khan Academy would fall under Augmentation & Modification. The student videos act as a functional improvement. This allows each student to get different instruction, while also working on different skills & tasks
