Key Words: Great learning: Even better: Good learning: Describe the Missouri Compromise Great learning: Explain the impact of the Missouri Compromise on sectional tension Even better: Evaluate … Key Words:

LOUSIANA PURCHACE JUST A MINUTE Students have one minute to explain the Louisiana Purchase without hesitating, pausing, repeating themselves. Get them to play on tables? Winner at the end gets a small prize?

LOUSIANA PURCHACE Write a paragraph that explains why the purchase of the Louisiana Territory could cause tension between the North and the South. You must include the following terms: Statehood Constitution Balance of free/slave states Senate Get students to understand that this could be a problem because if the territory becomes organised into states: Constitution does not give guidance on what should happen to slavery There is a balance of free and slave states, which could become unbalances This is important for the Senate, where there are 2 Senators per state. Expansion of slavery will annoy abolitionists (acknowledge they are small)

MISSOURI COMPROMISE WHAT WAS THE PROBLEM? Get students to use their homework to recap what the problem was with Missouri applying for statehood.

MISSOURI COMPROMISE EMHASIS ON DEPTH As you should know, the America unit is a depth study, which covers 32 years of history. This means you need to know the Missouri Compromise in detail. Before the final Missouri Compromise was passed by Henry Clay, there were three other ideas that were proposed (but failed to pass and become law). Each table will be given one of these other proposals. Your job is to write a speech, explaining what you think the conditions of Missouri entering the Union should be. This speech will be the only information your peers will use to makes notes on! Group 1: James Tallmadge Group 2: Jesse Thomas Group 3: Missouri Constitution 1820 Get students to use their homework to recap what the problem was with Missouri applying for statehood.

James Tallmadge (Whig from New York): Added the Tallmadge Amendment to Missouri’s proposed constitution Prohibited the further introduction of slavery Children of slave parents be freed at 25 Jesse Thomas (Illinois): Constitution without the extension of slavery Maine as a free state Excluding slavery from the Louisiana Territory north of the parallel 36°30′ north (the southern boundary of Missouri), except within the limits of the proposed state of Missouri. Missouri new constitution 1820 protected slavery banned ALL blacks from entering PRINT OUT 2 COPIES (CLASS SET?)

Henry Clay and the Missouri Compromise Recap the outcomes of the Missouri Compromise

Need to explain your choice of emoji Summarise the North’s reaction in emoji's Summarise the South’s reaction in emoji's Need to explain your choice of emoji NORTH: Happy that there was not a balance of power between slave and free states (Missouri wanted to be slave) Angry that slavery has been allowed to expand SOUTH: Missouri was a slave state Angry that the Federal Government had made a law on slavery U.S. government had no power to restrict slavery, which was protected under the Constitution

Consequences of the 1820 Compromise Short Term Long Term Balance of political power in the Senate A compromise treasured as much as the Constitution Status of slavery of the Louisiana Purchase land was decided A compromise that does not satisfy the North OR the South The Missouri Compromise lasts for over 30 years! (until Kansas-Nebraska Act) It left open the question of slavery in areas outside of the Louisiana Purchase Expectation to keep an equal amount of slave and free states Highlights how fatal issue of slavery was, specifically in relation to westward expansion Get students to write this table, but positive consequences in one colour, and negative consequences in another colour.

Write a PEE paragraph answering this question To what extent did the Missouri Compromise cause division between the North and the South? Write a PEE paragraph answering this question POINT – How much division was caused by the Missouri Compromise? EVIDENCE – Give relevant, specific and detailed information about the Missouri Compromise EXPLAIN – how the evidence you have used proves the point you have made Use a different colour for your point, evidence and explanation Peer mark if time?
