REVIEWING AMERICAN GOVERNMENT MODULE 1B. RESOLVING OPPOSING POSITIONS REVIEWING AMERICAN GOVERNMENT

LEARNING TARGET 4 Identify a civic issue and explain how persuasion, compromise, consensus building, and/or negotiation are used to resolve opposing positions on the issue. The processes of persuasion, compromise, consensus building, and negotiation come into play by varying degrees during activities related to governing. For example, legislators use various methods to resolve differences of opinion when considering legislation.

PERSUASION AND NEGOTIATION process of inducing others into accepting a point of view by means of reasoning and argumentation could include using data from a research study to sway a legislator who is undecided on a bill Negotiation process of settling differences through a discussion of issues often takes place involves a series of meetings in order to discuss solutions to a conflict

COMPROMISE AND CONSENSUS process of making concessions to settle differences one side may agree to remove a specific provision of a bill that was preventing the other side from supporting the bill Consensus Building process of working toward achieving general agreement within a group both parties search for common ground or areas of mutual agreement in order to solve a conflict
