What is Scientific Argumentation? Why do I need to learn how to write one?

Why?? Because science writing is very specific Because supporting a claim with evidence is a key part of how scientists share information Because being able to tie in new evidence to existing understanding is how science grows

By using the C-E-R Framework So how do I write like a scientist??? C – Claim E – Evidence R – Reasoning SUPPORT ! I T

What is a CLAIM? A statement that answers a scientific question

What makes a good claim?

Is it a strong claim? The question students were answering: Are soap and fat the same substance? Review each statement. Which ones do you think represent a strong claim? What feedback would you give the student to make the statement a claim or improve the claim?

What makes good EVIDENCE?

Is it good evidence? For each of the following, Determine if you think it represents a good example of evidence Decide if you would use it when making a scientific explanation. Describe your rule for something to be considered evidence.

Evidence

Evidence Information that supports the claim. Scientific Data Comes from observations in natural settings or controlled experiments, measurements, or valid scientific sources. Personal Information Comes from opinions, beliefs, and everyday experiences.

OKAY TO USE, BUT NOT AS STRONG! Evidence Information that supports the claim. Scientific Data Comes from observations in natural settings or controlled experiments, measurements, or valid scientific sources. Personal Information Comes from opinions, beliefs, and everyday experiences. BETTER TO USE! OKAY TO USE, BUT NOT AS STRONG!

What is good REASONING? Justification that links the evidence to the claim. Explanation of why the evidence supports the claim. Includes scientific principles when appropriate.
