Good Afternoon SPONGE Write down your EQ and homework for today. What war was the result of militarism and nationalism in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries?

Political Rivalries Other European powers attempted to build empires of their own- lead to competition and rising tension Competition over land Russian Navy- wanted port in Mediterranean France lost territory to Germany

Economic Competed for land and natural resources in Asia and Africa Wanted new markets to sell products and a source for cheap labor

Ethnic Ethnic Group- share common culture (often language and/or religion) Austro-Hungarian Empire- only allowed Austrians and Hungarians to vote

Ideology Weltpolitik- “World Politics” Germany wanted to be equal partners with other leading powers like Great Britain

Ideology German @ 1st- Peaceful allaince @ late 19th century became more aggressive and build their empire

Nationalism Nationalism lead people to struggle for independency from those dominating them Balkans (think Austria Hungary) Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assinated June 1914 by a Serbian nationalist Austria Hungary declared war on Serbia Due to alliances- a lot more countries got involved
