Community Waikato Established in 2001 Team of 9 staff Board of 8 Broad range of skills and experience Primary purpose: Provide a capacity building service to the Waikato Region Do this through fostering the development of skills, knowledge and connections of community organisations in the Waikato region.

Charities in the Waikato Region 2015 81 new charities registered, 309 deregistered 1283 Charities in our region Of those, around 60% could qualify for the support of Community Waikato The combined income of the charities is $1,224,487,421.00 Combined assets totally $3,971,504,924.00

Capacity Building Capacity building “The process of strengthening organisations in order to improve their performance and impact or those activities that strengthen a non-profit organisation and help it better fulfil its mission” (Connolly and Lukas 2002:7) Strengths based model: Encouraging organisations to take responsibility in resolving their own issues with guidance and support

Why build capacity? Organisations need the resilience to undertake the work and ensure they are legally compliant Working towards long term sustainability through Good planning Good understanding of what the organisation needs A range of funding sources

What we want to achieve Community groups work best when they have the right structures and practices in place Robust structures and practices that protect staff Organisational clarity and direction Established frameworks for planning Maximising the impact community groups can have in the work they do

Fund Management We have 4 streams of funding we manage- Mental Health Scholarship, Community Waikato Scholarship, Tindall funding and Len Reynolds Trust funding. Len Reynolds Trust is a new source of community funding for the Waikato area. As a capacity strengthening organisation we are unique in the added support we can offer applicants. We have 4 streams of funding- Mental Health Scholarship, Community Waikato Scholarship round, Tindall funding and Len Reynolds Trust funding. Len Reynolds Trust is a family trust which seeks to work in partnership with community organisations by providing funding for community development, social services, health and environmental organisations. Being able to use the proven Tindall model for the Len Reynolds fund distribution simplifies applications for our community groups and has given the fledgling Len Reynolds Trust a sturdy and proven platform from which to grow. We are unique in that we work closely with our groups in a range of ways. We have been working for 15 years in the Waikato, and our staff are highly skilled in a range of areas. We know our community, the challenges they face and the needs that arise. We connect likeminded groups, we can refer originations facing challenges to those who have experienced similar problems for mentoring and support. We can support organisations who have come to us for funding to address the issues or gaps they may have. We can identify organisations that need support with their applications, and we can refer new people to Tindall and now Len Reynolds as sources of potential funding. Our Waikato community is characterised by having a large rural component, much of which has limited funding available. For example Colville has 11 possibilities, of which over half are smaller funders ($2000 to $5000). In comparison a typical Hamilton organisation has over 30 options, including a significantly larger Council component and including gaming trusts which due to lower population numbers generally aren't available to many of the rural organisations.
