Why I chose my title. I was very interested on doing my project on Benjamin Banneker because he was the first African American to get acknowledged for his skills.
ASTRONOMER , SCIENTIST BORN November 9th 1731 in Ellicott’s Mills , Maryland DIED October 25th 1806 in Baltimore , Maryland
BANNEKER FAMILY Son of an ex-slave named Robert Banneker Because both parents were free Benjamin was a free Man Grandmother Molly Banneky was a white woman
WELL EDUCATED He was taught to read by his grandmother Molly For a short time attended a small Quaker school
EARLY 20’s He constructed a wooden clock He’s talent came to the Ellicott brothers He taught himself Astronomy, accurately forecasted Lunar and Solar Eclipses
EARLY 20’s He was loaned numerous books in mathematics by George Ellicott an Astronomer 1791 Banneker teamed up with an American Surveyor , to Map out a new National Capital
Was noted by Thomas Jefferson that African Americans were not intellectually inferior to European Americans
In 1980 a postal stamps was made in his honor At age 74 Benjamin died memorial traces still exist in Ellicott City/Oella region of Maryland
Commissioned by President George Washington to mark boundaries to become the nations capital 1791 Largely known as a surveyor that worked on layout of what became Washington D.C
Came from Almanac that he published for 6 years from 1792- 1797

WHAT I’VE LEARNED ABOUT BENJAMIN BANNEKER. I’ve learned how Benjamin Banneker was the first African American to publish almanacs, a valuable tool in an agricultural economy. I’ve also learned he marked boundaries to the nations capital, Washington D.C. I learned Benjamin was the first high profile Black civil rights leader and model. leader.
