Do Now: Test Divide into small groups of 3 (max.) Each group will select one of the following poems: “Ars Poetica” (C. Alegria, p. 1076) “The Latin Deli” (J. Cofer, p. 1079) “Testimonial” (R. Dove, p. 1083) “Coastal” (M. Doty, p. 1087) Each group will write at least 1 QNT describing the theme of their respective poem (10 test points). You have 15 minutes.

Objectives: Be able to describe the effect Europeans had on Native Americans. Be able to analyze an informational text.

Focus Lesson: Outlining Analyze: to break into parts Turn to p. 6 in Elements… Direct Instruction Reading Purpose: effect of Europeans on Native Americans Analysis through outline transforms Guided Practice: General, specific or equal Section headers Independent Practice: after completing the outline, take 2 QNTs/section which pertain to the effects of Europeans on Native Americans.

Focus Lesson: “Trying to…” Google the phrase “thesis statement”. Come to class prepared to write a sentence about what it is. Provide an example of a thesis statement on the effect of Europeans on Native Americans.
