INSIGHT THERAPY Broad category of therapy in which the goal is to give clients a better awareness and understanding of their feelings

GROUP THERAPY Broad category of therapy which seeks to provide social support and reduce the cost of traditional therapy.

Rational Emotive Therapy Type of therapy used when clients are directed to change their “irrational” views of themselves.

Electroconvulsive Therapy Electric currents are briefly sent throughout the brain to reduce symptoms of depression, schizophrenia, etc.

Free Association Freud’s technique – allowing a client to openly discuss whatever comes to mind

(Can include removal or lesioning) Psychosurgery Brain surgery performed to change a person’s behavior and emotional state. (Can include removal or lesioning)

Stress Inoculation Therapy Teaches people a pattern of “self-talk” that allows them to defeat stressful situations

Modeling When a person learns a new behavior by watching others perform the behavior

Gestalt Therapy Designed to make people more aware of their feelings and making them “whole and complete”

Client-Centered Therapy Identified by Carl Rogers – the idea that therapy should focus on the client’s point of view, not the therapist’s or the world’s view.

Beck’s Cognitive Therapy Similar to Rational Emotive Therapy, it seeks to lead clients to have a more realistic and less critical view of oneself. (Focus on depression)

Systematic Desensitization Gradually reducing irrational fears step by step

Transference Assumption that the client transfers feelings from childhood onto the therapist

Token Economy Secondary reinforcers are given to clients to be “cashed in” for something positive.
