Pick a Star....... Jobs and skills – discussion around transferrable skills and skills for jobs, lead on to option choices – activity??

Are you good with statistics and figures? Are you creative and resourceful? Are you interested in technology and good at IT? Are you able to visualise ideas in 3-D? Are you interested in anatomy, physiology and psychology? Are you a good communicator? Ergonomists, or human factors specialists, are concerned with the relationship between people and their surroundings, and the equipment they use. They use their knowledge of technology and science to design or improve objects, systems or people’s working or leisure environments. They can be known by a variety of names, including usability professional, human factors engineer or health and safety specialist. 6

Are you confident and outgoing? Could you accept criticism and rejection? Are you creative and good at music? Would you be willing to travel? Are you willing to practice and work hard for long hours? Do you have good business and negotiating skills? 6

Would you like to work outdoors? Can you work well as part of a team? Could you lift or move heavy objects? Could you operate basic machinery? Would you be able to get up early? Are you responsible and reliable? 6

Are you artistic and creative? Would you like to work with your hands? Could you work quickly and accurately? Could you explain your ideas clearly to other people? Would you be able to stand for long periods of time? Are you outgoing and friendly? 6

Are you friendly and helpful? Do you have good spoken and written communication skills? Are you responsible and able to keep calm under pressure? Do you have a good sense of humour? Could you work on your own and as part of a team? Are you a patient person who can show initiative ? 6

What you need to remember when choosing your subjects Keep your career ideas open – you may have some ideas but these may change Do take subjects that you enjoy Do take subjects you are good at Do remember to take at least 2 sciences if you are interested in a scientific or medical career Don’t think some subjects are just for girls or boys Don’t be influenced by your friends’ choices Don’t take it because it is with your favourite teacher – you may not have that teacher another year! Don’t take subjects that you find difficult – they will likely become harder in S4

Your Next Steps Consider all we have discussed today Ensure you are registered on My World of Work Continue with your research – videos, case studies, information on the changing world of work on www.myworldofwork.co.uk Talk to people: Your teachers Your family Your careers adviser e.g. come along to a lunch time drop in Conclusion it is important to research areas of interest, talk to people and keep up to date as the world of work is continually changing. Remind them of their jigsaw worksheet with which they have started to piece together their own jigsaw and have begun to use CMS to help them. Their jigsaw is their action plan to help them move forward. They now need to start to research how they will achieve their goal - encourage pupils to use My World of Work (if now registered)   Name of School Coach
