Training “one reason commonly given by firms for not training their staff is that these well-trained staff will then be approached by other firms.” Maybe those firm should focus more on motivating their employees to stay.

Different types of training: Induction training: given to all new recruits On-the-job training: involves instructions at the place of work Off-the-job training: courses of instruction away from the place of work Training is expensive so you want to make sure that you keep your qualified staff through effective motivation techniques. Development and appraisal should be a continuous process

Drawing up contracts of employment Employment contract: is a legal document that sets out the terms and conditions governing worker's job Lets look at some examples

Discipline and dismissal of employees Role play activity for employee discipline Up in the Air-employee dismissal examples Dismissal: ending a worker’s employment contract for incompetence or breach of discipline. Unfair dismissal: ending a work's employment contract for a reason that the law regards as being unfair.

Staff redundancies Redundancy: is when a job is no longer required, so the employee doing this job becomes redundant through no fault of his/her own. Do Activity 10.4

Employment contracts Recent trends in labour recruitment have been towards employing more part-time staff on temporary contracts and using outsourcing more often. These have advantages and drawback to both the business and the staff. Read page 190 and summarize these advantages and disadvantages
