Today: Altmetrics: why now? Workshop development Workshop walkthrough Lessons and outcomes
Altmetrics = “alternative metrics” Supplement other measures of academic success Only work online Track/measure digital interactions Do not replace: citations, your H-index, or a journal’s impact factor. Only work in a networked environment
Altmetrics are already on campus Institutional repository Publisher metrics New forms of research and research outputs Provided authors with downloads, searches that lead to their papers and # of “views” We have authors publishing in OA journals that provide altmetrics (PLOS) Such as code and podcasts
Workshop Development Needed an “anchor” Content Accessible and friendly Shout out to our colleague Lorrie Pellack, who’s been teaching about research “impacts” for years. Anchor: Reference source and easy access to online tools Content: Other guides were: out of date: ReaderMeter, dense, deep separation of the sciences and humanities Accessible: needed it to be useful for a wide audience – campus has a high # of new Fac and high grad student attendance at workshops

Altmetrics REALLY are for everyone! Please Remix/Reuse/Redistribute/Revise the guide Don’t worry, it’s OK to not know everything…and have fun with altmetrics on your campus!
