Welcome to Year 2 This is a very important year in your child’s development. They will learn to become a lot more independent in their learning and be taught a variety of subjects in more depth. Their learning will build on their experiences in Year 1. Welcome to St. Jérôme Church of England Bilingual School

Year 2 – National Curriculum 2014 In the mornings, our focus is on Maths and English. In the afternoons, the children learn a wider range of subjects in greater depth, for example, Science, History, Geography, Computing, Art, Design and Technology, Religious Education, Music, Physical Education and Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education.  

End of Year 2 Government Expectations Maths: Understand the value of digits in numbers; add and subtract 2 digit numbers; know the 2, 5 and 10 times tables and related division fact; identify fractions of shapes. Writing: Write about experiences (real and fictional); use the correct tense; use basic punctuation correctly; use conjunctions (and, but, because, if, when); form letters correctly; spell common exception words. Reading: To read accurately words with 2 or more syllables; Check that what they have read makes sense; and answer questions on what they have read including inference. SATs

Mathematics - How you can help? Counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. Adding and subtracting anything and everything – practice number bonds to 10 and 20 Cooking/baking together weighing out ingredients Talking about the shapes you can see in the environment Reading the time (accurate to 15 mins). Talking about fractions – “half of the cake”

English - How you can help? Reading books (stories, information books, newspapers, magazines, comics etc.) Encouraging your child to talk about books – the story setting, the character, the plot, the humour etc. Make writing fun – shopping lists, cards, letter to… Encourage children to sound out words when writing Handwriting - modelling correct letter formation and pencil grip Welcome to St. Jérôme Church of England Bilingual School

Routines – Reading Books and Book Bags Children need to bring their reading books and reading records in their book bags every day. There is a set day to change reading books, but children will often be asked to get their books out and read in school, so they need their books all the time. Other subjects In Science, we will be looking at materials and their properties and will focus on using the correct scientific vocabulary. In History, we will be looking at transport in London in the past. Welcome to St. Jérôme Church of England Bilingual School

En français ! Daily classroom routines embedded and expanded Daily lessons with “Camembear à Paris” to introduce reading and writing French Bilingual specific input based on the French programme of studies Geography, Art and P.E. delivered in French (CLIL) Consult Pinterest and play songs and videos to the children Be encouraging, congratulate and share with us! What will my child bring home? Book Bag Reading Book Reading Diary Spellings – assessed on Thursday but please return the book every day. Homework – issued on Friday and due in on Tuesday. Bilingual children will bring home a French reading book PE kit will be returned on Fridays to facilitate washing.

What we expect from parents: To bring your child to school every day To be on time for school To ensure your child has correct, full school uniform To label all items belonging to your child To ensure your child brings in a water bottle To bring in your child’s book bag and spelling book every day To read with your child every night (and sign the record book) To order lunches in advance (and tell your child what you have ordered for them) To ensure your child has correct, full school PE kit in school on Mondays If you have any issues or concerns, please do come and speak to us.
