SAT Practice #7

Intro to Unit 2 – cultural perspectives In Unit 1 you examined how culture impacts the way people communicate and interact. In this unit you will extend that investigation to include how culture affects people’s perspectives on things like family and justice. You will think about how people from diverse cultures can come to understand one another through art, as well as universal human concerns. (p. 109) We will explore texts where people share their unique experiences and perspectives through the narrative structure. We will identify ways in which these authors communicate their perspectives – which literary techniques they use in their writing.

Goals for unit 2.0 To construct a speech that expresses a perspective gained through a defining moment To answer a research question To deliver a speech utilizing narrative techniques and other elements of speaking To analyze narrative techniques and use them in writing and presenting 2.5 / Of Mice and Men / Research Paper To examine perspectives of justice across cultures and over time To understand and apply the elements of argument To develop an argument on an issue for a specific audience, using an effective genre

Intro to unit, continued Vocabulary – handout – continuous Unpack Embedded Assessment #1 – Defining Moment Speech. With your group: Summarize in your own words what you will need to know for this assessment. Create a graphic organizer or two column chart to identify the skills and knowledge needed to complete the assessment successfully. Strategize how to complete the assignment. (What kinds of things will you need to do along the way to help yourself successfully complete this assignment?) Review the criteria in the rubric. (Handout) **Be ready to share your responses with the class.

Defining moments/Perspectives (small groups for discussion) As you watch the film, Present, answer the following: What is the defining moment in the film? How might this moment change things? As you watch the film, Snack Attack, answer the following:

Poem – “Where I’m from” 1st Read – whole group 2nd Read – small group Mark for sensory details/descriptive language that appeal to senses 2nd Read – small group Discuss and answer Qs 1, 2, 3, 5 What techniques from this poem could be used to help communicate my own defining moment? This is an example of a poem that addresses many small moments – these could be defining moments. Students could discuss how these moments change things for the narrator? Or we could use as the opposite of a defining moment…Definitely the piece is used for how the author incorporates sensory language and anaphora as narrative techniques.
