The Six Kingdoms
Archaebacteria Ancient Prokaryotes- no nucleus or membrane-bound organelles Unicellular-single-celled organisms Live in extreme environments Obtain energy from chemosynthesis Autotrophs or Heterotrophs-depending on the species
Eubacteria Germs “True” Bacteria Prokaryotes-no nucleus or membrane-bound organelles Unicellular Autotrophs or Heterotrophs depending on the species These make us sick, but help us, as well Ex. Streptococcus, Pneumococcus
Protista Eukaryotes Multicellular or Unicellular depending on the species Live in moist environments Lack complex organ systems Autotrophs or Heterotrophs depending on the species Examples: amoeba, paramecium, slime and water molds, algae (seaweed or kelp)
Fungi Eukaryotes Multicellular Have cell walls Have thin filaments that penetrate soil or decaying organisms Decomposers Heterotrophs-no chloroplasts, they are not green Examples: mushrooms, yeast, mold
Plantae Kingdom Eukaryotes Multicellular Have cell walls and chloroplasts Autotrophs-make their own food through photosynthesis Examples:ferns, flowers, trees, lily pads
Animalia Eukaryotes Heterotrophs Multicellular Examples: Fish, Insects, Bears, etc.
