Those are fancy words… Utopia (n): a perfect or ideal place or state. An imagined place or state of things in which everything is perfect. Dystopia (n): an imagined place or state in which everything is unpleasant or bad. Often, a totalitarian or degraded state of being. Add these definitions to your Frayer Diagram handout.

Activity: Visions of Utopia and Dystopia DYSTOPIA OR UTOPIA? Your group will be assigned one or the other. STEP ONE : Create a list of characteristics, actions, rules, colors, issues, etc. that your group feels would be relevant to your given reality. SYMBOLISM: Create a symbolic shape that could represent the ideas of your given “reality.” Would it be a positive or negative symbol? Should it be literal or metaphorical?

Visions of Utopia and Dystopia: Group Collages CREATE: Using the ideas your group came up with, create a collage of images and words that best represents your given reality. Use magazines, draw, write, and print out things to include in the collage. SHAPE: Use the symbol your group created for your given reality to shape your collage. You can draw it on the paper and fill in with the cut outs, or you can simply arrange the cut outs in the shape later. DELIGATE: Everyone should be participating in some way. Some people should look for things to include on the poster, others should be in charge of gluing them down. PRESENT: Groups will present their posters to the class, explaining the selection of at least 8 items on the poster and the symbolic shape your collage has taken. Each member must talk during the presentation.

How to Give a Good Presentation… Make eye contact with your audience. Not just the teacher! Smile  Speak clearly. No mumbling! Know what you will say before standing up in front of the room. Speak loudly. No mice allowed. REMEMBER: Each group member must speak in order to receive a grade!

Closing: Notecard Address one of the following prompts in 4-5 sentences: What could be a “downside” to living in a utopia? In other words, is perfection always “perfect”? OR, how do you think a dystopia is created? If everything has a beginning or point of origin, where does a dystopia originate from/because of?
