1. Size/ownership/profit orientation of mass media 2. Advertising 3. Dependence on sources (official sources and corporate sources)… 4. “Flak” 5. Anti-communism

Eric Alterman Main claim: media is NOT liberal, conservatives who say it is are “working the refs” What does he base his argument on?

Alterman argument Conservative outlets (Fox, WSJ, NY Post) Elite journalists hold socially liberal views but are overall affluent – affluence is associated with economically conservative views “You’re only as liberal as the man who owns you” - Structure of news industry Self-censorship/related to the necessity of catering to advertising interests
