Presentation transcript:

Characteristics of Life A cell is the basic unit of life. The Cell Theory states that: All living things are composed of one or more cells. Cells are the basic unit of structure and function in living things. All cells come from preexisting cells. unicellular multicellular Asexual vs. Sexual Unit 1: The Science of Biology

Characteristics of Life Cells come in TWO MAIN CATEGORIES. Eukaryotes Prokaryotes Contain a true nucleus DNA is enclosed in a membrane Contain membrane-bound organelles Don’t contain a true-nucleus DNA floats freely in cytoplasm Doesn’t contain membrane-bound organelles. Unit 1: The Science of Biology

Characteristics of Life All Living Things…. #2 : All living things reproduce. Unit 1: The Science of Biology

Characteristics of Life Reproduction is important for the continuation of a species. Organisms can reproduce in one of two ways: Asexually Sexually Unit 1: The Science of Biology
