2-3 Deductive Reasoning Objectives: To use the Law of Detachment and the Law of Syllogism in deductive reasoning. To Solve problems by looking for a pattern.

Vocabulary Looking for a pattern Law of Detachment Deductive Reasoning Law of Syllogism

Law of Detachment If p → q is a true conditional and p is true, then q is true.

Examples

Deductive Reasoning The Law of Detachment and other laws can be used to provide a system for reaching logical conclusions. This system is called deductive reasoning. Deductive Reasoning is one of the cornerstones of the study of geometry.

Law of Syllogism If p → q and q → r are true conditionals, then p → r is also true.
