Working

Under Federal Law Children younger than 14 are restricted to delivering newspapers, working in a non-hazardous business owned by a parent, baby-sitting or doing other minor domestic chores in a private home, or performing on stage, screen or radio. They may work only between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. during the school year and until 9 p.m. in the summer. At 14 and 15, teens may work at non-hazardous jobs for three hours on school days, eight hours on non-school days, 18 hours during a school week and 40 hours during a non- school week. At 16 and 17, teens may perform any non-hazardous job for any number of hours.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor 50% of American teenagers hold informal jobs, such as babysitting or yard work, by age 12. 2/3 of American teens have had some kind of employment by age 15. The average high school student works 20 hours per week, and about 10% work full time (35 hours or more).

How to Choose a Career That’s Best for You What are your natural talents? What’s your work style? Where do you like to work? Do you enjoy social interaction? How important to you is work-life balance? Do you deal well with stress? How much money do you want to make?

Career Advice—Warren Buffet

Try this motto… An employee's job is to give his or her best work every day. A manager's job is to give the employee a good reason to come back to work tomorrow.

What your employer expects from you… Be on time and in work when expected Do your job to the best of your ability Take care of your appearance, making sure you wear appropriate clothing Treat your colleagues and the organization's customers with courtesy and respect Be open to new experiences and willing to learn new skills according to the needs of your job

Reflection #8: Working What are your personal values? And how do you prioritize them? What environment/culture do you enjoy working in? What are your interests and strengths? What are you most passionate about? What are your long-term goals? What is your desired lifestyle balance?
