Psalm 37
Psalm 37 1 Fret not yourself because of evildoers; be not envious of wrongdoers! 2 For they will soon fade like the grass and wither like the green herb. 3 Trust in the Lord, and do good; dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness.
Psalm 37 4 Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. 5 Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act. 6 He will bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday.
Psalm 37 7 Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices! 8 Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath! Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil. 9 For the evildoers shall be cut off, but those who wait for the Lord shall inherit the land.
Psalm 37 4 Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.
Psalm 37 Synopis: Do not be anxious, envious, or angry about evil and evildoers. It’s not worth it. They will soon be gone. By faithfully trusting God your heart will find true and rich happiness.
Psalm 37
Genesis 3:15 I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”
Three main emotions: Anxiety (fretting, worry, irritation) Envy Anger
Proverbs 3: 5-6 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
25 “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?
27 And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? 28 And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, 29 yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31 Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’
32 For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. 34 “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
Point #1 Overcome Anxiety With Trust
1 John 2:16 For all that is in the world, the desires of the flesh, and the desires of the eyes and the pride of life, is not from the Father but is from this world.
Psalm 37 7- Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way. 16- Better is little that the righteous has than the abundance of many wicked,
Proverbs 23:17 Let not your heart envy sinners, but continue in the fear of the Lord all the day. Proverbs 14:30 … but envy makes the bones rot.
Point #2: Overcome envy with contentment.
Psalm 37 8- Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath! Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil.
Psalm 37 25- I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread.
Point #3 Overcome anger with peace.
Philippians 4 4 Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. 5 Let your reasonableness[a] be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; 6 do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
