Arrogance/Pride: “There I sacked the city, killed the men, but as for the wives and plunder, that rich haul we dragged away from the place—we shared it round” (9.46-48). Odysseus doesn’t need to attack the Cicones, but they are allies of the Trojans and he wants them and the Trojans to remember who he is and that he defeated the Trojans in the war.

Activity 5: Writing the Body Begin drafting your first body paragraph Use the topic sentence that you created in Activity 3 Before inserting evidence, include the context of the quotation Be sure to embed the quote into a sentence using lead-ins. Fully explain your evidence before moving on. Complete the paragraph with a concluding sentence.

BODY PARAGRAPH #1 Topic Sentence: In the beginning of the epic, Odysseus starts off as an arrogant persuasive man motivated by his own self-satisfaction. Quote Set Up : This is evident when Odysseus and his men stop on the island of Ismarus, home of the Cicones. Text Quote: He and his fleet of ships “sacked the city, killed the men, but as for the wives and plunder, that rich haul [they] dragged away from the place—[they] shared it round” (9.46-48). Analysis: It was not necessary for Odysseus and his crew to stop on the island and attack the Cicones, but he wanted the allies of the Trojans to know that he was the great Odysseus who defeated the Trojans in the war. Closing Sentence: Thus, it is his arrogance that causes Odysseus to act this way.
